In a kitchen far, far away…

Ok, so who has two thumbs and loves Star Wars? THIS GAL.  Ok, all craziness aside, I grew up watching the original trilogy on VHS (you know, those really cool plastic black brick things) and enjoyed how great they were (without all the re-editing that Lucas added for the DVD release in the early 2000s…yeah Lucas, I’m still not ok with all the added graphics).

But I digress.  I’m pretty sure that Luke Skywalker was my first crush-he was just so cool!  He was a simple farm boy plucked from obscurity by the FORCE to realize his true destiny-to redeem the Jedis and defeat the Dark Side.  Classic hero story, am I right?

Ok, I promise I’ll stop fan-girling.  So, about five years ago, I saw that William-Sonoma was selling Star Wars cooking stuff!  They don’t sell this particular set of four cutters any longer, but they do have a lovely 8-set collection that I want to get my hands on eventually. They are super easy to use and clean, and create really lovely sugar cookies.  My set includes the Death Star, Millenium Falcon, Vader’s Tie Fighter, and X-Wing Fighter.

Here is the recipe for the sugar cookies, also taken from the William-Sonoma website, but I’ll put it here for easy referral.

Ingredients

  • 16 Tbs. (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 piece vanilla bean, about 2 inches long, or 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the flat beater, beat together the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Add the egg yolks one at a time, beating well after each addition. Cut the vanilla bean in half lengthwise and, using a small, sharp knife, scrape the seeds into the butter mixture. If using vanilla extract, add it now. Mix well.

In a sifter, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Sift the flour mixture directly onto the butter mixture. Reduce the speed to low and beat until well mixed.

Turn the dough out onto a work surface and divide into 4 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball, then flatten the balls into disks. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. (The dough can be prepared up to 3 days ahead.) Let it soften slightly at room temperature before continuing.

Position a rack in the upper third of an oven and preheat to 350°F.

Roll out your cookie dough to be about 1/4 inch thick and then cut out your shapes!  The way these cookies cutters work is that you press the shape down, and then gently press the spring button on top to create the image on top of the cut out shape.  The button should spring back up and then you can remove the cutter to have your Star Wars cookie!

Bake for 8 minutes, until the edges are golden.  You can always decorate them with icing if you’re adventurous.  I have never gotten that far because they’re eaten…they’re really yummy, ok?
